Sababa: Center for a Healthy Environment in the Arava

Founded in 2001, the Center for a Healthy Environment in the Arava, known by its Hebrew acronym, "Sababa," advocates for environmental action and cooperation in the Arava region, and is the only grass-roots, environmental activist NGO working south of Mizpe Ramon. Sababa works with the local community in dealing with regional environmental issues and challenges, encouraging residents to get involved in protecting their surroundings.  Sababa also works with the local authorities, such as the Nature and Parks Authority and the environmental department of the Arava Regional Council to seek and create solutions to problems that arise.

Sababa's activities include:
  • Gathering information about environmental news or events and forming collaborations with residents and authorities to address challenges.
  • Attending local meetings dealing with planning, development and conservation in the region.
  • Publishing and disseminating crucial information to the residents of Hevel Eilot via mail, website and Kibbutz bulletin boards.
  • Coordinating campaigns against destructive development in the region.
  • Conducting surveys about nature values in the region.
  • Providing AIES students and staff environmental information about the local community.
