  • Raising Crops for the Production of Ethanol for Bio-fuel

This project evaluated the potential of the Southern Israeli Arava Valley in producing crops suitable for the economic production of ethanol for bio-fuel. The project concentrated on plants growing on desert lands and using brackish water, thus freeing lands and water of higher quality for crops raised for food.

Various plants were analyzed during the course of the project, including sugar sorghum, sugar beets, sweet potatoes, and mesquite. The plants’ sugar content, and thus their viability as feedstock for the production of bio-fuel, was assessed.
