Cross-Border Climate Collaboration in the MENA Region

photo of a session during the 2025 Cross-Border Applied Climate Change Research in the MENA Region workshopIn May, our Center for Climate Change Policy and Research held the 2025 Cross-Border Workshop on Applied Climate Change Research in the Middle East and North Africa. The workshop, held in Athens, brought together approximately 30 Israeli, Palestinian, Jordanian, Moroccan, and European researchers and experts — an inspiring group that, due to regional conflict and political restrictions, would not otherwise be able to meet in person.

Over three days, they worked on collaborative projects, sharing knowledge and expertise, to provide cross-border solutions for pressing climate issues:

  • Food security
  • Sustainable urbanism
  • Circular economy
  • Public health
  • Water management

These initiatives were grounded in shared challenges and a collective desire to learn from one another—striving for a more just and sustainable future for the region.

This workshop offered more than just academic collaboration—it was a powerful glimpse into a peaceful, cooperative future built on mutual respect and shared goals.

We would like to thank Dr. Elise Machline, Director of the Center for Climate Change Policy and Research, and Michelle Cohen, Research Coordinator, for organizing this workshop.
